Introduced in 1986, Vinum was the first machine-made series of glasses in history to be based exclusively on the characteristics of quality, reasonably price and wide distribution.

Vinum has had a permanent impact on the globe’s wine glass culture. These glasses have proved to consumers and restaurateurs that the pleasure of consuming wine starts with the glass.

The Vinum collection, developed by Georg Riedel on the principle that the content commands the shape, is the “Vitrum-Vinothek” for every day use.

Vinum is made of over 24% lead crystal.

Perfect for young, full-bodied (more than 12 percent alcohol), complex red wines that are high in tannin.

This glass smoothes out the rough edges, emphasizing the fruit, allowing wines to achieve a balance that would normally take years of ageing to acquire.

The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully. The shape directs the flow of wine onto the zone of the tongue which perceives sweetness, thus accentuating the fruit and de-emphasizing the bitter qualities of the tannin.

Bordeaux (red), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Tempranillo.

Vinum Burgundy (Pinot Noir)

The Vinum Burgundy glass is excellent for full-bodied red wines (more than 12.5 percent alcohol) with high acidity and moderate tannin.

This glass directs the flow of wine onto the zone of the tongue which perceives sweetness, thereby highlighting the rich fruit and tempering the high acidity of the wine. The large bowl captures all the nuances of the wine\'s aroma.

NOTE: Although this glass is quite differently shaped from the equivalent Sommeliers glass, the Burgundy Grand Cru, both designs are as effective in bringing out the character of the wine because they control the flow of the wine onto the palate in the same manner.

Vinum Riesling Grand Cru

Riesling is a grape variety known to produce one of the finest white wines, balancing its high acidity with residual sugar.

The fresh acidity and high mineral components produce a concentrated wine with wonderful peach aromas.

This wine also ages extremely well, changing slightly in color, giving the characteristic aged Riesling tone

Vinum Single Malt Whisky

On the basis of this first selection, Georg Riedel undertook further research with the help of master distillers in Scotland.

This research resulted in a glass that is an elongated thistle shape on a truncated stem. The design incorporates a small, slightly outturned lip which directs the spirit onto the tip of the tongue, where sweetness is perceived, and serves to emphasize the elegant creaminess of top quality single malt whisky.

Vinum Syrah / Shiraz

This shape was developed between 1993 and 1995 following tastings in the major Syrah growing regions, when most influential winemakers contributed their views on how the message of their wines should be put across.

The wines made from the Australian grape variety Shiraz, give a deep purple, almost inky color. The nose resembles intense, rich blackberry aromas. The flavors on the palate show mouthfilling fruit, massive structure and a long sweet finish.

The Syrah glass highlights the tannins, offering a perfect balance with the overwhelmingly concentrated fruit.

Vinum Zinfandel / Chianti

In 1993, Georg Riedel invited a distinguished panel of Zinfandel producers to join him for a series of workshops and tastings. Their aim was to develop the ideal glass shape to highlight all the nuances and complexity exhibited by Zinfandel.

The resulting shape, the Riedel Zinfandel glass, tempers the alcohol, accentuates the rich berry and spice characteristics of Zinfandel, while gently interweaving the acidity, tannin and fruit to create the perfect balance of components.

Recommended for: Zinfandel, Chianti.
